You get a new assignment and your instant reaction is to say yes. You always welcome overtime. You’re comfortable with meetings being scheduled at any time of the day. If this sounds like you, you’re probably on your way to burnout.

It’s okay to be a go-getter; after all, that’s how you moved rapidly up the ladder. However, with today’s ability to access work from practically anywhere at any time, it’s becoming harder and harder to take time for yourself.

Here are a few tips on how to avoid burnout:

Learn to Say “NO”

In order to take back time for yourself, you’re going to have to learn to say “no”. Since it’s in your nature to help in any crisis, this is probably the hardest word for you to accept. But, if you want to relax, unwind, and continue to perform well, it’s a word you need to use.

This doesn’t mean you stop working or learning; it simply means that you take on what you can handle and no more. You may think that if you say no that you may not get the promotion or raise you’re seeking, but, the truth is that when you take on more than you can handle, your quality of work suffers. In the end, you might look incompetent instead of looking like the hero for completing more assignments than anyone else.

Find a Hobby

If you are like many people who throw themselves into their work, you probably don’t have a lot of hobbies. Hobbies can be a great experience because you can learn something new, developing and diversifying your talents in exciting ways. Here are some hobbies that can help refresh your life:

  • Learn a new exercise routine like Zumba or water aerobics
  • Enjoy a brisk morning run
  • Wake up thirty minutes earlier and meditate
  • Take a long walk at the end of the day to watch the sun set

Or, perhaps you have a hidden talent that you set aside for workplace ambition. Try painting, woodworking, or writing. Did you love doing something in elementary school that you’ve always wanted to get back to? Take some time and get back to it. There’s no better time than now. The key is to find something to remove you from your work mode.

Make Time For You

You might be asking yourself how you get time to start a new hobby. You’ve been working a lot and so you know there’s no more time in the day. A great way to to overcome this issue is to schedule personal time slots that are yours to do what you want with. This scheduled time can be open to anything: developing that new hobby, meeting up with a friend, going to a game, getting a manicure.

The point is to create time for yourself. Stop working 24/7 and start living. Visit your family and friends, enjoy a Sunday barbecue, or go to a movie or for a run. These kinds of things will enhance your skills on the job because your mind has a chance to relax. But you need to schedule the time in—it won’t happen if you don’t schedule it.

Reevaluate Your Priorities

It’s proven that people who devote all of their time to work in a high-pressure environment are prone to develop serious health issues. Your heart beats faster. You don’t eat right, get the proper amount of sleep, or exercise enough to be healthy. Because of this, you’re setting yourself up for a disaster.

Reevaluating your life and your priorities can help you avoid burnout. Incorporate things like a healthy diet, regular exercise and daily supplements to improve your physical quality of life. To enhance your personal life, try picking up a new hobby, learn to say no, and be sure to make time for you.
